This post is going to be aimed towards parents of young gymnasts. As parents we often sit in the stands and think about how we can help our children. The answer is simple support them. When the
y are done they need a "good job" or "you worked hard" from mom or dad. As a coach I see many parents immediately start ripping them for things they witnessed while sitting in the stands. They have been coached for the past three hours they do not need anymore. When kids go home from practice they want to have fun, play games, hang out with friends, let them!! Parents always stop me after practice and ask what they need to work on at home. I tell them having fun! They are competitive athletes, they are also kids. Let kids be kids and enjoy the sport. If you never let your child get away from gymnastics, you will burn them out.
Thanks for chatting with me today. See you soon!!
I've been reading a book called Top Dog, the first chapter deals with stress and analyzes what makes humans stressed out. The book compares how a gymnast competing in front of an audience is as stressful as a individual skydiving for the second time in their life. You are absolutely right "Let Kids Be Kids" c'mon parents.
ReplyDeleteThat is an interesting opinion. I will have to check out that book! Who is the author?

ReplyDeleteThis is great! I see this a lot in other sports too. Jazz played t-ball for a while, those kids are like 4 and 5 years old and they don't even keep score. I would see parents harping on their kids for what they did wrong before they even congratulated them for giving it their all. Remembering that kids are kids is important, yes during sports you have to pay attention and not goof around, but they still want to have fun.
ReplyDeleteOh I have seen it all. Kids normally do better when less pressure is on them anyways!!
